Ngarua Notes

(From our own Correspondent Considering tho time of the ye.;r the pastures ue looking first-class. Mis '. M. Cr cket has resigned as teacher of the local school The Education Board has n. lifted that Mr Wilford P. Bannken h. n s been aopoicted her succes-.-r from May o, he hails from WairoaNoith. The residents le r > with ,'iutitude that their application to the County Council for s tndi'ig the r >id at Ngarua is about t> bear frui . i'endeis having been c .11 'd for same, thanks to th i- .•nceg*'tic repres ntative, 0- u icillor Hughes l h • road drain that was under discussion between deputation from HungaHunga Dr linage Board and County Council at last meeti ig of ' ounoil; well the Council has s arOd fasciniug the road, or I should say bog holes, alongside of this drain. I* not. this demonstrating the superlative wisdom of our Councillors ? They a*e starting to patch up with ti-tr. e what wiU be an interminable job. and which wdl absorb a gr at deal more money than the cl aning >u "f the drain. The cleaning out of ihis druin (which at present is not discemahle in places, !>• ing fully congested with weed ) would make an efficient and permanent job, by relieving the road of the water that is run’dng over it, and supplying the much needed spoil to cover up the stumi s which are protruding here and there. T e latter if not promptly attended to will be involving the Council in a seiious law-suit fir damages as the sequel to an accident. We are sorry to have to record that Mr James McDonald, who recently bought out Mr Davey here, met w.th a very painful, and what might have been a very serious accident, the other morning. It appears Mr McDoual l had his waggon loaded with 3ocwt of potatoes, which he was taking to Waitoa Station, and when in the act of getting on the waggon one of the horses, who is young and restless, made a sudden plunge, starting the other two horses, and a bolt ensued, with the consequence that Mr McDonald was thrown down, and the wheel passed over the calf of his leg and right hand, severely bruising and lacerating both. The wonder is that both leg and hand were not broken up. He was carried inside and the wounds dressed. Mr McDonald, who is of that good old hardy Scotch extraction, makes a good patient, nlthough suffering acute pain. We wish him a speedy recovery. Mr Joseph Scherer and Mrs Scherer are enjoy Ing a few weeks’ holiday in Taranaki, visiting the scenes of 'their late residence there, and renewing ihc acquaintances of old fried* and relations. Theipotato crops in Ngarua are turning out well ; Messrs Donovan Bros, having tiken 15 tons of table potato, s from three-quarters of an acre of lan J , while Mr McDonald has two potatoes which weigh eight pounds.
