Sculling Championship.

ARNST AND WEBB. ACCEPTANCE.OF CHALLENGE

Christohuroh, Saturday. At the meeting of Arnst’s guarantors last night, it was decided that Arnst should accept Webb’s challenge to row for the world’s sculling championship and £SOO a-?ide. There was some discussion as to where the race should be rowed. The people of Akaroa have offered very substantial inducements to the present champion to row the race at Akaroa, but Arnst naturally desired to eliminate, as far as possible, the chance of weather conditions which in an open harbour might render the result of the race more a matter ofJ luck than of sculling ability. It was eventually decided to endeavour to have the championship rowed in Canterbury, as Arnst was f now recognised as a Canterbury / resident./ Mr R. Heaton Rhodes, -< M.P., one of Arnat’s guarantors, went to Dunedin yesterday, to negotiate with Sir James Mills in regard to the transport of spectators to and from Akaroa, in the event of the race being decided there. The final decision as to the place at which the race is to be j rowed will largely depend upon the if result of these negotiations. . Jpf Arnst stated that he was feeling particularly fit, and was anxious that the championship should be rowed with as little delay as possible. He anticipates that the date to be fixed for the race would be towards the end of May, and he proposed to go. into active training at once. His trainers 1 would be Floyd and his brother J. Arnst, and his pacemaker Fogwell. The race, he added, would decide whether he or Webb should fulfil the engagements already entered into by him to row Durnan in Canada, in, August, and Barry, in EugHnd, for £IOOO a-side in the allowing month.
