THE CHALLENGE STARS.
WON BY THAMES RINK.
On Saturday at Paeroa the final match for the handsome challenge stars was played off between the Thames and Karangahake rinks, who had been successfnl in the various sections, and were left to decide the event. The Thames rink was undoubtedly a strong one —Messrs R Wood, Inglis, Court, Ensoll—while the Karangahake players —Messrs Lloyd, Morrison, Hinton and Jury-—were look upon as a strong combination. The result of the game was somewhat of a surprise—not at the victory of Thames, but at the almost sensational manner in which they piled up the score. Karangahake had the lead at the first few heads—at the fourth head the score was 7 —2 in their favour, but Thames scored no less than 11 at the next four heads, and thus secured the lead* The game was Thames 10, Karangahake 7 at the seventh head, while at the 14th head Thames had put up 22 to Karangahake’s 10. The local representatives continued on their victorious way, end with a six at the second last head they finished up winners by 34 points to 15, a maiority [of 19. The scores and players were as under; — THVMES KARANGAHAKE. R. Wood C. Lloyd J. T. luglis G. Morrison A. Court J. Hilton J. Ensoll (stip) 34 E. Jury (skip) .. 15 The winners were heartily congratulated on their success, / and were loudly applauded when they received the handsome stars. It is probable that a Paeroa rink will endeavour to wrest the stars from the present holders, the game (according to the conditions under which the stars are held) to be played at Thames.
