MORRINSVILLE
(Own Correspondent) The builder. Mr Tate, is making good progress with Mr Hickey’s residence, which he is having built on his property that is situated in what is known as Morrinsville Extension No. 1. The building is of a useful and ornamental design and will improve the appearance of that portion of the town.
An incident what might easily have terminated with serious results
occurred at Highfold the other evening. Mr Jordan, who was riding a young horse, jumped off quickly to lift up a sheep when the, saddle slipped round, his feet catching in the stirrup. The horse lashed out, fortunately missing the rider’s head by a few inches. He managed to shake himself clear, the horse took over two or three fences and got somewhat cut about having to have its wounds stiched, bit will soon be right again after a short spell, Mr Jordan is none the worse for his narrow escape
The idea of a Co-operative Bacon Factory in t ie Valley is no doubt a good one, but why not establish one in Morrinsville ? A more central position could not be found as the pigs could be received here from Rotorua in one direction and Thames in another, without being tram* shipped, and, it would also be handy to Waikato.
The meeting of the Y.M.C.A. called for Monday evening was postponed until Monday next owing to the inclemency of the weather, ,as was also the meeting of the Town Board which was called for ,the same evening.
The fortnightly meeting of the local Oddfellows’ Lodge was held on Tuesday night and there was a good attendance of members, who take a keen interest in Lodge matters. Bro. C. Gurnmer was elected a trustee of the lodge, vice Bro. J. Trust resigned. The subject for debate at the meeting a month hence was fixed : “Is compulsory Military Training advisable in New Zealand.” Bro. S. S. Allen was appointed to lead the negative side and Bro. A. Gurnmer the affimativ6.

The ladies added to the enjoyment by providing afternoon tea, and the game was a very enjoyable one respire the delay caused by the passing of a heavy shower of rain.
Members of the proposed Y.M.O-A, much appreciated the article on tM,C A, work, which appeared in Tuesday’s issue of the News. A paper run on similar Hues as the New? would, no doub-, be well supported if printed and published in Morrinsville.
| Replying to the above, there is'no doubt that the proprietor of the News would favourably consider any matter, brought before him by the business people and sutlers, regard ing the establishment of a Local paper if he was directly approached by them. —Ed] A meeting of the trustees for the Morrinsville Saleyards was held on Wednesday evening. After due consideration of the financial position it was decided to make a final call of 4s per share which will bring the amount called up to 19s per jpound share, that being sufficient to pay accounts and to refund the law expenses of the original Committee, which is most satisfactory, as the main object, in getting a sale established, has been attained, and shareholders have received a pounds worth of scrip in the Auctioneering Company at the cost of J 9s. An advance section of the Seddon Horse volunteers have arrived, and are busy getting the camp at Annandale ready for the remainder, who will arrive on Friday. A detachment of 15 members of the permanent force are expected on Friday to get things in readiness for the . encampmant at Mr Starkey’s at Easter.
It speaks well for the enterprise of the local business men that they ■ succeeded in obtaining the contract j for the supplies, Messrs C. and A. Grimmer, Turnbull, and Linderman ! being the successful tenderers. J Mr ITawkine, who had the misforI tune to have his leg cut off with a , disq harrow last spring, returned home during the week after 18 weeks stay in • the hospital. He is still unable to j move about, it being only a little over ( a month since he underwent the second operation. No doubt the change will do him good.
