Ngarua (late Waiata)

Owing to there being gazetted a Post Office of the name of Waiata elsewhere, we have had to change the name of our locality. It is now called Ngarua, and our local Post Office is gazetted under that name. Ngarua means between two rivers, and as such is very appropriate, as we are situated between the Waihou and Waitoa Rivers. Since writing you last, we have lost one of our most respected neighbours in the person of Mr S. H. Daveyand family, who have sold their farm here and bought another at Mangaiti. Previous to Mr Davey’s departure, he was treated to a surprise social and presented with a marble clock, when some very nice things were said and regret expressed at their departure. Mr and Mrs Davey and family are a type of that good old kindly neighbour, who, if they cannot do you a good turn will not do you a bad one ; and we sincerely wish them well in their new home.

Mr McDonald, who comes with a good reputation, succeeds Mr Davey, having bought his farm. The little draught which we were experiencing has broken up properly, and the roads are becoming very muddy. Sanding is badly needed and dissatisfaction is expressed at the inaction of our Council during the fine weather.
