THE MAYORALTY.
[To the Editor.] Sir, —It is just about time something was done to choose a man for the position of Mayor of the Borough of Te Aroha. There are plenty of good men well qualified to fill the chair. I read your leader re the great work done by the present Mayor, but Ido not agree with it all. Mr Somers has done good work; so have bis predecessors, and so will those who follow after. When elected a year ago Mr Homers said it would be his last term ; he has said so all the year, and in response to an influential deputation definitely declined to again sit as Mayor. Well, it is time we hunted around for a successor —one whom the business people will place confidence in, and will take some notice of, and not go contrary to his wishes. To mention a few names, I think any of the following gentlemen could fill the Mayoral chair with credit: Messrs Capt. Lyons-Montgomery, T. Mclndoe, P. Gilchrist, D McL. Wallace, Cr. J. Rowe, Cr. Hubbard, F. Pilling, A. W. Edwards, or Thos. Gavin.
I am one of those who strongly object to going down on my knees and beseeching any man to take up the position. Now that Mayor Somers has definitely decided to retire let us choose one of the above mentioned gentlemen, or someone else.—l am, etc.,
Ratepayer,
