Riots in Lisbon.
THE MILITARY CALLED OUT. Lisbon, February 28. The Republican carnival in Lisbon last night led to a wild demonstration against Monarchy and resulted in rioting and disorder. As the outcome of which 200 arrests were made while many wounded masqueraders gave a mockery of last year’s tragedy when King Carlos and the eldest son were killed"
These and their assassins were impersonated and obsequees were stimulated by means of coffins containing skeletons. Blasphemous songs were mean* while sung by the revellers. The police interfered and stoped those taking part in the demonstration while the mob joined forces with them. t
Showers of stones and other missils were hurled at the police. Eventually the military were called out and the disturbance was quelled, but not until a great number of rioters had been wounded.
