MORRINSVILLE
• ■ Own Correspondent. ,jfe” A stalwart young Maori came into the town on Sunday from the Tahuna < District and from his p/eculiar actions it was soon discovered that he was out of his mind, so Constable Lowry took him in charge and he was committed to tl e Mental Hospital. A gentleman who came in from Tahuna on Tuesday states that the Maori’s brother also went mad and blew his head off with a gun. It appears that they both had been working on the Government drainage works, which where stopped and as their pay had not come to Land they were blooding over it with the above result, Mr H. J. Clifford, J.P., ActingCoronor and Dr. Seville went to Tahuna this morning for the purpose of ' holding an inquest on the Native who shot himself. The local Oddfellows’ Lodge is making steady progress. There was a latgc attendance on Tuesday evening and members evinced a keen interest in Lodge matters. Several new members were proposed and Permanent Bro. G. F. Oates was appointed Deputy to attend the annual district meeting Mr A. Humphries arrived on Monday * to take charge of the operations of putting down the foundations of the new Post Office, which promises to be an ornament "to the town, and of great convenience to residents generally. The contractor has made a start with the bridge over the Piako on. the Kereone Road, which convenience will be appreciated by stockowners who attend the local sales from the Walton dis- v trict.
Much sorrow was felt locally’, at the appalling loss of life on the wreck of the Penguin. A neice of one of the victims resides here.
Peaches and nectarines are very plentiful this season, the tree being fairly breaking down with the weight of the fruit.
Mr Wallace, who purchased Mr Davenport’s blacksmithing business ntends to be up-to-date, as he has had he telephone installed, so as to be able o keep in touch with his Te Aroha stablishments. We are glad to learn that Mr Wright is ow able to resume his duties again at tie creamery. The supply of milk is eeping up well, but is now under two lousand gallons a day. It is thought that these tests will compare favourably with other tests throughout the district. We are sorry to learn that the Police Department has taken the telephone away from the Police Station. It is supposed to be, that owing to the energy of Constable Lowry crime has almost become extmet about Morrinsville with the result that Mr Justice Cutten had very little to do when he cam’e to the town. Now that the Constable is somewhat handicapped an increase of crime may be expected. Still it is wrong that in order to provide work for Messrs Cutten nnd Lowry the rest of the community should suffer
