WAITOA DRAINAGE SCHEME
(To the Editor.)
Sir, —During the discussion on the Waitoa Drainage Scheme, at the last County Meeting, it was stated that my estimates of the cost of works to the Piako County Council always fell about 50 per cent short of the actual cost that | the County had to pay, and by the time that my scheme of roading the Waitoa I Block was completed the cost to the County would run into £7,500. j I submit to you for publication a list of the works that have been carried out j this season, and including the present contract in hand, with the to Oil estimates as submitted to the Council, and also the total actual cost of the works as accepted by the Council. I also give you the estimates for the Eastport and No. 2 Roads'on the Waitoa | Block, together with the cost of the works there, as far as the roading operations have been proceeded with You will be able to see by this, how far my estimates have been out as compared with the actual cost of the works, and I do not think it is right or fair for such statements to pass unchallenged. Below will be found the figures referred to, starting at Contract No 1 and finishing up at Contract No. 40:— Total cost of contracts up-to-date for the present season, £2,944 7s lOd. Total estimates for the above works as submitted to the Council, £3,105 3s lOd. Amount in favour of my estimates, £l6O 16s.
Waitoa Block :—Eastport Road, Estimates as compiled in the scheme, £492. Actual cost of the works now in operation, £378 16s lOd. Amount iu favour of estimates, £ll3 3s 2d.
No. 2 Road, from Eastport Road to No. 1 Road, estimates as compiled in scheme, £490 13s.
Actual cost of the present works, £283 Amount in favour of my estimates on the Waitoa Roading Scheme so far as we have at present proceeded, £320 17s lOd. I will take this opportunity of stating that I will guarantee to carry out my scheme to a successful issue, and not go one penny beyond the lump sum of £5,000 as already adopted by the Council.
Thanking you in anticipation of your inserting the above. —I am, etc., W. R Johnson, County Supervisor Waihou, 11-2-09.
