Piako County Council.
FIRST MEETING OF THE NEW COUNCIL.
The above meeting was held last Monday in the County Office at Te Aroha, the business being to elect a Chairman and deal with county matters generally. There were present Crs. W. P. Chepmell, C. Manuel, J. B. Thomas, T. Bellamy, J. Brady, aud T. Hughes. Cr. Chepmell was elected Chairman.
Thames Harbour Board. —Cr. Manuel was appointed representative of the Council on the Thames Harbour Board.
Manakau Canal Trip.—The invitation of the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce for a representative of the Council to accompany them over the route of the proposed WaikatoManakau Canal, was declined.
Financial Matters.—A Committee in the chairman and Cr. Thomas was set up to meet a committee from the Matamata County Council to arrange financial matters between the two bodies. The meeting was fixed for Wednesday week, the 17th inst.
Boundary Drain.—Mr A. Thompson drew the Council’s attention to a drain along his property on the Gordon Road, which required cleaning out. —The matter was left to the foreman to report upon. Waitoa Road—Mr F. S. Hunt, Waitoa, complained of the state of the road on his property. Cr. Bellamy said the road was in a really bad state.} Cr. Thomas suggested that the Council should meet in committee to consider ways and means of dealing with work of this description.
The Chairman thought all these smaller matters should be kept note of and dealt with en bloc, instead. . This was decided upon. Need of a Road. —Mr M. Neilson wrote in reference to the need of a road between Motumoho and Tauhei. If the Council would proceed with the work this summer the settlers would contribute £SO towards it. — Put on the list of work to be considered.
Tramway Report.—Ex-Councillor Gavin presented his report on the Waiorongomai Mine Railway. The Chairman said ,the difficulty was to get a man whom they could trust to keep the tramway in order. After some discussion Mr Hill was appointed to the 'position, with instructions to report to each meeting of the Councfl as to the working of the tramway. Crs Hughes and Brady were elected a tramways committee to inspect once a month. — The report was received. Track Report.—Mr Gavin also reported on the Waiorongomai-Waita-wheta track, offering to supervise the work free of charge.—lt was decided to accept Mr Gavin’s generous offer. The report was adopted. Grazing Rights.—Mr Thos. Reed, of Morrinsville, offered £2 for grazing rights on the gravel pit at Morrinsville. The request was granted at £2 10s on the understanding that the Council be allowed to place their horses there when necessary.
Special Orders.—The chairman moved that a special meeting be held on the 22nd for the purpose of making a special order for payment of’ interest on loan of £5,000.
