Te Aroha AND Ohinemuri News

THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 11, 1909 BOROUGH MATTERS.

lhis above all—to thine own self be true , \ nd tt must follow as the night the day Thou const not then be false to any man Shakespeare.

The Borough authorities are making the best of the fine weather to prosecute the work of tarring and sanding the pavements, and if the sunshine holds, should find the work greatly facilitated thereby. We understand that they are somewhat deferring some of the drainage work on this account, but that they propose to proceed with the connection of Kenrick Sewer to the through cut in the lagoon in a few weeks. For some time past the sewage system, so far as the boarding-houses have been concerned, has been in a very good state. In almost every instance these accommodation houses have been placed on a thoroughly satisfactory basis with regard to the house sewage. What the borough authorities are now aiming at is to have all the premises connected with the present b jrough ‘ drainage system in such a way as to obviate the conduct of offensive drainage through any but closed sewers. Much been done. Many connections have been established between the various premises in the town and the sewage system. It is only the I matter of a few weeks before the whole of the premises within the scope of the sewage system will be connected with it, and it is only lack of funds on the part of the Borough that will retard the extension of the drainage work The Borough Council is fully alive to the need for a thorough drainage system, and has shown this by the fact of having wrought out the present scheme upon the most slender nucleus.

It will be remembered that, at a meeting of the Borough Council to consider the matter of sanitaiton, held on January 13th, the Council adopted the model sanitary byelaws are prepared by Drs. Frengly and Makgill, making slight alterations therein to meet the case of ofTe Aroha. These bye-laws pro vide that the work done in connection with the sanitary drainage shell be thoroughly efficient aud up-to-date. Dr. Purdy and Mr Franklin were both present at the meeting and the matter was thoroughly gone into.

Dr Purdy has a high opinion of what Te Aroha is capable of, and was kind enough to afford our representative some hints as to the development of our town. These suggestions were published some time ago, in a leading article dealing with the sanitation of Te Aroha. It was gratifying to find that the doctor was pleased with the progress made in sanitary matters during the year.
