Waiata Warblings.

Own Correspondent.

Some time ago we held a progressive euelire party aud basket social in the local sohooihouse for the purpose of raising funds for that institution Although the weather was unfavourable there was a good attendance and the functions were highly successful. We wish to accord Miss Salt and • r Tom Donovan our very heartiest thanks for coming from Te Aroha and supplying the. dancers with the best of music; we appreciate their kindness very much; also Miss A. M. Crickett for the kindly use of her piano, and to Miss L. Scherer for the energetic way in which she carried out her secretarial duties ; we must not forget either, the ladies who bronght along tueh a splendid collection of beautiful baskets, laden with good things. It was owing to the sale of these baskets under the very capable conductorship of Mr Tom Donovan that the function was such a success financially, some of the baskets brought up to 17s. The total receipts were £9 4s 6d includingentrance, sale of baskets, and the sale of the gentleman’s and ladies’ first prizes which were won by Mr and Mrs J. Soberer respectively, and who kindly donated same towards the funds. Mr P. B. Fisher kindly attended during (he evening with his superior gramaphone and rendered some choice selections. A iter supper Mr T. Hanna, on behalf of the trustees thanked all and sundry for their kindness in attending and contributing towards the evenings enjoyment. On the 21st in t., the opening of the Tennis Court took place, there being a good representation from the neighbouring Clubs present, besides a large attendance of Waiata folk. Mr T. Hanna, President of the Cl b, after an appropriate speech called on Mrs Hanna to send the first ball over the net, and then formally declared the court open. The court which has recently received a couple of dressings of asphalt was in splendid order, and was spoken highly of by the visitors. The games, of which a summary is appended, were well contested.
