At Mr Haselden’s meetings at Waihi on Friday evening, Mr Hernes, M.P, said that Tories were now as extinct as the moa.

A remarkable scene was witnessed the other day at Trepptow, on the bank of the Upper Spree, Germany. At about six o’clock in the evening a young girl of about eighteen, who had been walking up and down, suddenly'threw herself into fhe river. A shopkeeper named Bauer, who happened to be near, jumped in after her, and, notwithstanding her endeavours to disengage hertelf succeeded in bringing her to shore where a number of hands were ready to receive her. By this time Bauer’s own strength had been exhausted, and he sank back into the water. The girl thereupon dived in after him, and, proving herself a good swimmer, brought him back in safety. She then walked away, refusing to give her name.
