Mr Hawkins, who s recently purchased Mr Rice’s farm on the r Lockerbie Estate, was about to com- > mence discing, and was putting the horses in the disc when they started off. Mr Hawkins endeavoured to catch ’ hold of the horses’ beads, but slipped in 1 the grass, and before he could roll out of 1 the way the discs passed over one leg. ' cutting his foot clean off and severing the 1 bone high up. Mr Corbett, a neighbour, | saw the horses making off, and immediately went to Mr Hawkins’ assistance, rendering first aid. Dr Seville was quickly on the scene, and ordered the unfortunate man to the hospital where he was taken by the express. A distressing feature in connects n with the accident is that Mr Hawkins was only recently mar ried, his wife being a new arrival from England. —Mr Trust’s Illness— It is pleasing to learn that Mr Trust is making good progress towards recovery, and is receiving every attention ai the Waikato Hospital. —New Masonic Hall— Mr J. C. li. Watts’staff are putting the finishing touches on the Masonic Hall which is a handsome and commodious building, and a credit to the fraternity. —Another New Residence.— Building operations continue bri-k. Mr Layne has the timber on the ground for his residence in Studholme-street. —Cricket— The local Cricket Club has just received a quantity of new material and ' intend starting practice in earnest at once. The Club is endeavouring to arrange a match at an early date. I —The Pastures. — I The recent mild rain was very beneficial ; to pastures, the supply of milk to the local creamery is double the quantity of last season. -Spilt Milk.— A case of spilt milk, occurred on ] ! Saturday morning, when a horse attached f ,to a milk cart ran away from the i creamery and bolted right through the j main street, luckily escaping much g damage. Besides the loss of the milk, f the owner, who overtook it on horse £ back, got knocked over but escaped \ without serious injuries. c
