BIG NO-LICENSE VOTE
Moke than usual interest was manifested on Tuesday last in the triennial election of Parliamentary representatives for the Dominion of New Zealand. At no previous period had so much interest been ta’ten in the general results of the elections as it was the first period in which the Ward Administration—since the decease of the late Premier, Hon. E. o. Seddon—had appealed to the country for a continuance of their support. In all the centres the various important seats

were contested strenuously by various candidates. As far as this district iscon•rned, renewed confidence was shown in Mr Herries, who defeated his opponent, Mr J. A. Young, by a very substantial majority. The Ohinemuri returns place Mr Poland again at the head of the poll, with Mr Oppositionist, close up. A secofta Dxftot will result, which will be eagerly contested. No-license was carried in Ohinemuri.

In Auckland the various seats were hotly contested, and the Bauie remark applied to the local option polls in more than one centre. In Auckland it was rumoured that there was a big probability of No-license being carried, but anticipations in this direction were not realised, though Parnell has carried reduction. At Auckland Central, Auckland West. Grey Lynn, and Parnell, stenuous campaingns were fought, and aad the result was that Messrs Fowlds, Poole, La wry, and Baume were re-elected while Mr Glover defeated Mr Kidd for his feat.
Whitaker-street, on election night presented a scene of intense excitement. For some little time previous to the arrival of results, small knots of Te Arohaites and visitors were observed intently discussing the possibilities of the various candidates. When the first result (from Waiorongomai) was posted in the front window of the News Office, a wild stampede was made towards it, and in a very short time a huge crowd had assembled. A few minutes afterwards the result arrived from Waihou and from that on every few minutes more details were coming to hand. A large white transparency was hung in the News window and as the returns from the various polling booths came to hand, they were immediately added. In addition to tlis, much amusementwas caused by comic sketches, etc., appearing in rapid rotation. The excitement was kept at fever heat until about midnight, the onlookers then turning towards their homes apparently well-pleased with the result of the election of 1908.
Some mild practical joking was indulged in by a few of the younger end, but on the whole the crowd was an orderly one and in good humour.
