MR POLAND AT MANGAITI.

[To the Editor.] r ; Tn your Mangaiti correspondent’s l notes re Mr Poland’s political meeting be . lci ° n Tuesday evening in the local schoolhouse, he mentions that a vo'e of thanks and confidence was proposed, but at the request of Mr Poland it was altered to. one of thanks only. This is right so far v as it gees, only your worthy correspondent neglects to mention, that i t was not till an amendment was proposed and seconded, that a vote of thanks only should be accorded the candidate, that Mr Poland said he * a vote of thanks only. This little fact has no doubt slipped your correspondent’s memery, ' hence this letter to jog it a little. Apologising for taking up your valuable space.- I am, etc., 1 ~ . „ S. B. Bkowx. Mangaiti, 29th Oct., 1908.

[To the Editor.] Sir, We are still beizg assured by the license party that huge quantities of hquor are consumed in Ashburton. The truth is that during the last five years the consumption per head has been in Ashburton 14 galloi s, in the rest of New Zealand 84 gallons, per head. Last . year, in No-license Clutha, convictions for drunkenness averaged i per 1000; in the rest of New Zealand, 11 per 1000, twenty times as many. In Invercargill last year there were 75 Jonvictions for drunkenness. This we are ;old, proves the failure of No-License. The truth is that 74 of those convicted crocured the liquor outside Invercargill. The single person who procured liquor n Invercargill did so at a wedding. VTen and women of the Tauranga Slectorate,. will you longer support a system which leads to so much hiding >f the truth, crime and misery P —l am. itc., No-Lioexse.
