(To the Editor) Sir—“ No-License ”in your issue to-day states several of my statments were inaccurate and misleading: In reply I beg to state. Ist: There is now almost completed a very carefully taken censes of the Catholics of United States, and according to the Boston Pilot of June last, it stated that there was not the slightest doubt that the numbers would be well over 20,000,000 : I have no hesitation in saying 11,000,000 is out of it altogether. In the London Tablet, of last year, it gave the numbers as over 10,000, 000. Will No-License give his authority for 11,000,000. The P. D. slightly mixed up what I wrote, and so that accounts for the statement about Napoleon. Whatlwrote was, Napoleon said 100 years ago, the Pope holds in his hands the destinies of 100,000,000 of men. ” Today, according to the latest statistics he holds that destiny over 300,000,000 of the human race. There is no really accurate census of religions, but I have seen the number of Catholics given up to 334,000,000, so I will not make any hard and fast statement over the matter : for all general purposes 300,000.000 is near enough, it dosen’t matter much. Re Father Hay 1 *, I sincerely hope “ NoLicense ” will make known all the facts, even to details, it will bo interesting reading. There is really nothing to reply to in the rest of Iris letter.
