Herries, M.P., is the only candidate that has publicly notified his intention to contest the Tauranga seat at the approaching General Election. We draw attention to the advt. elsewhere in this issue. Mayor Somerß opened the tennis season yesterday with one of his neat speeches. Mrs Somers had the honour of drivng the first ball across the net, amid loud cheers. Followers of Izaak Walton are busily engaged getting their fishing tackle in order, as the trout season opens on November Ist. The Upper reaches of the Waihou are fairly well supplied with fish.

Mace, of Mangaiti, has discovered a freak lamb amongst his flock. The lamb is some weeks old, and as lively and frolicksome as the rest. It has five legs. About three months ago, Mr Harry James, of Te Aroha West, while engaged clearing on his farm, ran the point of a rush into his right eye. Notwithstanding the fact that Mr James has consulted medical men, the eye remains very painful and is causing him a good deal of trouble. Reynolds and other residents, of Waiorongomai that Thames High School endowment be taken over by the Government aud leased under tsrins which would enable the tenants to farm the land profitably, has been reported upon by the Education Committee. As the Public Bodies’ Leasing Bill, now before the House, proposes to give power to local bodies, including education bodies to deal inter alia with su -hjgrievances as are set forth in the petition the committee reported it had no recommendation to make. The Mine Manager of tho Rising Sun G. M. Co., reports for the week ending :3rd October, as follows: —We have been engaged ba fling frunthe No. 2 winze up till Thursday. Od Friday work was resumed iu the No. 3 Level, going South on the foot- wall reef. The reef in the face is about 2ft. 6in. iu width. The couutry is a little easier.
