LUCERNE FOR DAIRY COWS.
A special study' of the value of lucerne as a feed for dairv cows has just been completed by E. H.Otis, professor of animal nutrition at the College of Agriculture, University of Wisconism. An experiment which ho conducted (says, an American exchange) showed, that youngs cows not giving milk can- be kept in good condition during,.the winter, and gain from 1.2 5 to 1.5 pounds per day when fed nothing nothing but lucerne'' iiay.' : - f'*' .•" ,r . “ In compp»obh Ipcefnb"is-nearly, if not quite, equal to bran, .pound for pound/’' said Professor j}tis,;; discussing its nutritive? value. “ The excellent feeding value of lucerne lies in its high-‘content of digestible protein.. Wjth an average .yield of four ton’s, lucerne will produce 880 pounds of digestible protein per acre' A summary of feeding trials with dairy cows shows that lucerne ;/ ban be made to take the place of at least one-half of the grain usually fed to our dairy cows, *and all the nutrients needed by dairy cows can be produced . m uch more cheaply with lucerne than with grain, the cost of producing milk may be greatly reduced by its use.”
