THE WEEKLY HALF - HOLIDAY
To the Editor, Sir, —Another week gone by and still no alteration. Will the Inspector of Factories, provided we have one, explain what exempt* a shopkeeper from observing the weekly half holiday ? Is it the fact of selling cigarettes, tobacco and the like ? I and others would like to be enlightened on this point.—l am, etc.,
Justice.
To the Editor.
Sir, —In last issue of your paper “ Puzzled ” .makes . certain statements concerning the amount of liquor upon which duty was paid in Invercargill since No-License was gained in that electorate. He does not know, evidently, that most of the liquor used in Invercargill and three license electorates is imported by Invercargill, and that in that town duty is paid upon it. “ Female Voter,” in a letter so badly written that one is doubtful as to its meaning, accuses the local temperance people of hypocrisy, in discussing the question of “pots of ale” and not taking up Miss Michael’s case. Temperance people, so far as one can get at the meaning of “ Female Voter’s” letter, are oblivious to moral issues. In reply, I woull ask her to re-read my letter in last Saturday’s issue of the News. There she will find the moral aspect of the liquor question very prominent. Her letter, in fact, was clearly written to lead people off the scent. Is it “ Female Voter ” who, after all, is really the “ hypocrite ” ? I am, etc.,
Temperance,
