“Whangape” Breaks Down.

DRIFTING AT SEA.

Suva, September 23. A ship’s boat from the Union Company’s steamer “ Whangape ” has arrived here and reports that the steamer’s tail shaft was broken on Mondav last.

The vessel is drifting near the Island of Kaaava, which is some eight miles to the south of Snva The {Union Company’s steamer “ A tua” arrived in port to-day, and it is possible she will be sent out to pick up the Whangape. Dunedin, September 23. The Whangape was bound from Wellington to Suva. Her tail shafts broke on the afternoon of the 18th. The weather being fine Captain Chrisp despatched a boat for Suva on Monday 21st by which time the Whangape was within 80 miles of Suva The.boat was picked up by the s.s Atua bound for Fiji and the men were taken into port. The Atua left at 11 this morning to tow the Whangape into Suva, and as the disabled bosthas a spare shaft aboard the repairs will soon be effected.
