The Railway Crossing.
NARROW ESCAPE FROM
ACCIDENT.
A man named William Elvin, employed as a driver by Messrs Brenan and Co, had a narrow escape from accident last Friday afternoon. He was driving a waggon from the Paeroa Junction, and when approaching the railway crossing in Frances Street failed to observe the incoming train from Waihi owing to a truck laden with timber obstructing the view. Elvin drove right on to the railway line, but fortunately he was noticed by the driver of the train, Mr A Young, who promptly applied the Westinghouse brake and pulled up the train within a few feet of the waggon. But for Young’s promptitude in putting on the brake, there would have been an awful smash aud possibly loss of life. The danger of level crossings is thus shown once more, and we trust the Railway Department will take steps to have the crossing made a little less dangerous than it is at present.
