AUCKLAND DEFEATS OTAGO,
Auckland, September 13. The Otago-Auckland football match was played to-day at Alexandra Park under I ideal weather conditions, and in the pre--1 sence of some 3,000 spectators. The match was the last of the season for the Ranfurly Shield, and resulted in a victory for t\ uckland by 11 points to 5. Otago played against tbe sun in the first spell, Paton kicking off to near Auckland’s 25. The visitors rushed the ball over tlia 1 in, but Murray saved. The visitors still maintained a slight advantage. Patou attempted a penalty goal without result, Murray relieving. Shortly after Clarke forced down. Gillett kicked high from half way. Clarke’s effort to save the position being abortive, Batter falling on tlie ball. Auckland 3 points, Otago nil. On resuming play Gillet got the ball away to Seeling, who made an opening for Morse, who scored, Magee getting the additional points. Auckland 8 points, Utago nil. Shortiv afterwards McGuire got a hot pass away to Gillett, who transferred to Murray, the latter Scoring. Auckland 11 nil. Half time was called shortly afterwards. Auckland had the better of
the plav. On resuming Ivimoy and Fitzpatrick broke through the ruck, seconded by Eckhold, and as the result of a forward scramble McDonald scored Otago’s first try, Baton adding the major points. Auckland 11 points, Otago 5. Mr Rowe, of Wellington, was referee.
