At the Matamata S,M. Court on Wednesday last, before Mr E, C. Cutten, S.M., the adjourned case, Douglas v. Hendy, a claim of £7O odd compensation for loss sustained through a bush fire alleged to have been started by defendent, took up the whole day, a number of witnesses gave evidence for both sides. Mr 8. S. Allen appeared for claimant, and Mr J. R. Lundon for defendant. The S.M. reserved his decision.

Bell, tailor, of Te Aaoha, is having the back portion of his Whitaker Street property excavated, with the view of erecting a commodious and up-to-date workroom. The Reverend I. Dukes will preach in the Methodist church Te Aroha tomorrow morning and evening, and at Te Aroha West in the afternoon.
Mr E E Gillman, architect of Paeroa invites tenders for the erection of a shop, and alterations, etc., to a building at Paeroa. Tenders close at 5 p. m. on Monday 21st inst, at 5 p. m. A memorial service, at which there was a rrcord attendance, took ; lace on Sunday last at Te Ngutu-o-te-Manu Dnmniu Taranaki, in memory of the brave men who fell on September 7. 1868. The terrib'e c image experienced by the famous Major Yon Tempsky, will never be forgotten. The Young Peoples’ Literary* Society meets on Monday evening next.
Everything promises well for the To Aroha Junior Footballers’ Social, held under the auspices of the Piako Rugby Union, Avhich is to take place in the Public Hall on Wednesday evening next, Sept. 16th. The presentation of the Union Caps will take place. Doubtlessthe Hall will be crowded. Excellent music will be provided, and a most enjoyable time will be spent by all priviledged to be present, Grand March starts at 8 p.m. sharp.
