SEVEN MEN KILLED
THE RESCUE (PSRATIONS.
Brisbane, S ptember 6. A shocking disaster o:curred at the Mount Morgan mine on Saturday evening, resulting in the death of seven men named Leisham, Shepherd, Guthrie, Jory, Hillyard, Gerrke, and Ryan, who were employed at the 850 feet level. Suddenly without warning an immense mass of earth and rock, estimated at 3000 tons, broke away, filling the level, and burying seven.
Though it was recognised that the position was practically hopeless work in the mine was -stopped, and rescue operations started. These were continued throughout the night and to-day, but were attended by great danger owing to further debris falling. The last body was recovered to-night. All were terribly mutilated.
A great crowd surrounded the mine, where there were pitiful scenes. Five of those killed were
married.
Just prior to the collape a man met with an accident, and a companion accompanied him out of the fatal level, and Guthrie descended and took the injured man’s place. The man who escorted his injured companion was returning to work with two others, and had a narrow, escape. They- were standing just outside the disturbed area when it collapsed.
