The Mayor of Waihi (Mr John Newth) and Mr Foster, a member of the Borough Council, have gone to Wellington, to act with the deputation to the Minister fcr Railways regarding the construction of the East Coast railway. Cricket talk is in the air at present, and interest is lent to the approaching season by the statement that there is every prospect of a strong Australian team visiting New Zealand during the coming season. It is stated that the team will include a number of the foremost Australian pi lyers.

Suevic In company with Mr » (Thames), and his two daughters, th6y leave for a trip to Pans. Mr and Mrs W. Hetherington, their daughter, and Mr S. Hetherington, have booked their passage to New Zealand by the North German Lloyd steamer Bremen sailingfrom Southampton on October 4th. On September 6th the Misses J. and h Hetherington, who have been in England for some years, will leave cn their return to Auckland, also sailing from Southampton by one of the North German Lloyd steamers. Miss J. Hitbenugton was for some considerable time staying at Girton ; since then she has taken her degree. As Mr R. Farrow of Waitoa was driveing into Te Aroha in bis motor-car on Monday morning last, and when opposite the Waihou smithy, a horse that was standing outside attached to a sulky, unattended, took fright and bolted The result being that the sulky was upset and considerably smashed about. The horse escaped unhurt.

The captain and members of the Te Aroha Fire Brigade, while being thankful for the assistance given by civilians in pushing the reel to the scene of fires, desire that they would not intefere with the firemen in the execution of their duties on arrival at the fire.

At the Hockey match yesterday Mias Rowe received a nasty fall, and was considerably shaken. The local School Cadets have been asked to join in the Druids’ torch-light procession on Wednesday evening next.

There was a good attendance at the monthly meeting of the Te Aroha Band of Hope, held last evening, and a very acceptable programme was gone through. A number went forward and signed the pledge.

A notice appears elsewhere in this issue to the effect that the trotting stallion “ All Black ” will be at the disposal of breeders throughout Aratiatia and ■urrounding districts. Mr Tom Donovan and Mr L. Buchan, conductor and bandmaster, of the Te Aroha, Band who are also members of the Waihi and Waikino Bands, respectively, are taking part in the Hamilton Band Contest to be held on Oct. 7th, Bth, 9th. The Waihi Band are playing in the “ A ” Grade while the Waikino are in the “ B ” Grade. Both these gentlemen are playing solo cornet for their respective b nds The Waikino Band is under the conduetorship of Mr Fred La vn.

Owing to the increased water charge 8 decided upon by the Ohinemuri County Council the directors of the Thames Yalley Co-operative Dairying Company have decided to utilise the water from an artesian well, instead of drawing from the County supply as at present, ani have authorised the purchase of pumping and other plant necessary for the purpose. A considerable saving willthuibe effected as at the present rate charged by the Council the water consume 1 at the btUter factory would amount to about £l2O yearly. The company nas previously been charged at the rate of £3O per year. The local Gymnastic Club hold a social in the Public Hall to-morrow (Friday) evening, when the season will be brought to a close. The Te Aroha trio will supply the music. We hope to see n full house on the occasion as the members of the Club have been only two pleased in the past to render any assistance in their power in Concerts, etc. This is worthy of note : Boots, shoes and children’s footwear are going for a mere song.
