Te Aroha Borough Council.
The ordinary monthly meeting of the above Council took place in the Council Chambers, on Wednesday evening last, when there were present : Ihe Mayor (R. L. Somers, Esq), and Crs. J. Rowe, H. Jackson. A. Annan, Spence, and Hubbard.
Minutes of previous meeting read and confirmed. Inward and outward correspondence dealt with. —Correspondence.—
From R. Mackie re drains.—Letter received, From G. H. Deverell asking to be connected with the water main.— Granted From E. E. Gillman, architect foiwarding plans, etc- of alterations and additions to “ Ivanhoe ” boarding-house From A, W. Edwards, asking to be connected with the water supplyGranted.
—Reports.
Foreman Pillrington submitted bis usual monthly statement of works carried out, which was read and discussed. Turncock (D. McL. Wallace) reported that the rose box had been removed from the dam and fixed on the main inside the concrete sump on this side of the rocks and is a considerable improvement. He pointed out the advisability of cutting a small trench round to prevent surface water getting in; also that it requires covering. The reservoir was cleared out on the 23rd and all sluice out and fire plugs opened and pipes properly sluiced out. The valves and fire plugs are all in fair working order. —Goldfield’s Revenue, etc— The Treasurer advised that Goldfield’s Revenue to the amoimt of £79 3s had been placed to the Council’s credit at the Bank ; also £76 7s 6d on account of maintenance of combinedroadandrailway bridges for the year 1908-9 ; one quarter’s supply of electric energy for baths and ground, £39 4s 4d : to water supply to Domain and Te Aroha Hot Springs for year ending March 31st, £52 ; water supply for Police Station for same period, £2.
Subsidy on Rates
The Valuation Department forwarded a cheque for £9l 7s 6d, being subsidy on rates collected for the year 1907-1908. Lightning Arresters.
It was decided to purchase lightning arresters for power-house for the safety of employees.
—Septic Tank.—
Permission was granted “ Ivanhoe ” boarding-house to drain into Kenrickstreet, provided a septic tank is used.
—Permission to Stack Timber.—
An application from Messrs Mackie and Sons, for permission to stack timber in Kenrick street, during alterations to “ Ivanhoe ” boarding-house.—The 18 feet asked for was granted.
J as. Salmon reported as to the sanitary condition of the Borough, which on the whole, is in a satisfactory condition.
—New Railway Station. —
Permission was granted the Railway PepartniDnt to encroach 4ft. on the road in making the new station buildings —Additional Water Supply— |
Mr H. H. Metcalfe, who was deputed to report as to the best mode of extending the water supply for the town, in the course of his report, stated that the easiest way to bring in additional supply would be to connect a 3-inch pipe with the lower down pipe at the powea station, carrying it along the transmission line to the town reservoir, and drawing on it only when necessary. —Stone Quarry Cr. Hubbard referred at some length to i the excellent stone quarry recently unearthed. It was resolvod to make application for the ground as a reserve. Also that steps be taken to find cost of erecting a stone crusher, and water power available to work same. —It was resolved that Mr Pauitt survey the proposed reserve.
—Fire Brigade Station.—
The matter of erecting a small station in centre of town was once agaiu left to tbe Fire Brigade Committee (Crs Devy and Annan) to report ou. —The Bridge Loan. -
The clerk was instructed to wire to Government re payment of Loan money.
—Band Affairs.—
Arrangements were made for the payment of outstanding Band accounts.
—Electric Light Finking Fund.—
Cr Hubbard moved his notice of motion re providing one per cent, per annum for above, which was seconded by Cr Annan and carried.
—Cattle Driving.— It was resolved on the motion of Cr Jackson that steps be taken to prevent driving cattle through main street. —Accounts. — The following accounts were passed for payment: —P.
