TASMANIAN PARLIAMENT.
Hobart, July 15. Parliament was .opened to-day. 'The speech promised that the whole system of taxation would be reviewed, the unimproved land,, value tax submitted, Licensing Act Amendment to provide for. effective local option, and Bills dealing with closer settlement and free education.
TRIAL OF TILAK. Calcutta, July 14. The trial of Tilak, cabled on June 26th, has begun at Bombay before Mr Justice Davar p.nd a special jury, consisting of seven Europeans and two Parsees.
