COMMERCIAL
Messrs E. Griffiths and Co., are' in receipt of the following market report from their London (Principals Messrs Mills and Sparrow, dated 22nd .. ay, 1908.
Weather has been much brighter and there has been a fair amount of sunshine. All who are engaged in outdoor occupations are much more cheerful.
Danish.—Quotation has advanced one kroner. Market is very much steadier and there is a better tone all round.
Siberian is again poor, flavour of most of the dairies being faulty. French.—Fresh (unsalted) rolls are reduced 6d per dozen. Baskets both unsalted and salted, 2s to 4s per cwt. Trade has been fairly good and quality is pleasing. > Irish. —A great improvement is to be reported on quality, many retailers are now working this for 1 their best. The quantity is also increasing rapidly and reports say pastures are in good condition.
Australian.—The s.s. “Asturias’ shipment is cleared, and the “ Ortona’s ” is now being dealt with. The latter vessel carried apples, and most of the brands of butter on board have suffered more or less through “ apple taint.” The surveyors for the various interests are at work, but up to the time of writing we have not hoard of any settlement being made.
There has been more life in the trade and a shortage is again being felt. Last year at this time butter was accumulating and quite a few wore going into store. Now we have practically clear boards, and it will surprise us if many are put away for any length of time. Tliis should help us very much in October or before, as retailers must then come straight away on to the Colonial as it arrives. It is of course really early to say what prices will rule, but everything points to the continental butters and Home production being consumed quickly, so that good prices should rule, in addition to there being a good demand. Our feeling is that the coming season will be a good one for Australian butter. New Zealand.—The s.s. “ Rimutaka ” is now due, and the few butters on board will no doubt be quickly absorbed at full rates.
Cheese (Canadian).—Sales of new make have been made at 545, c.i.f. The s.s. “Latoma” with 18,000 to 19,000 on Board has become a total wreck. This loss will help steady the market, but there is now a disposition on the part of buyers to take any stock. New Zealand. l —White are in small, and demand a slight premium over coloured which are not selling as readily as agents wish, and prices on the week aro in buyers’ favour.
