PURE BLOOD FOR BEEF.
An American experiment station put two calves on rather; forced feeding ,to ascertain the comparative profit on a; scrub and a well-bred one. The one was a mongrel, containing some Jersey and Holstein blood $ the other, , what might be called a full blood crCss-r-tbat - is, a cross between 1 two pure~brefli breeds—the Shorthorn and • Angus. They were similarly ' fed until three and a-half years old. €3M
The mongrel, having considerable Holstein blood to give him size, took on as many pounds in the end as the cross breed, and had the experiment ! ended there the erroneous. • conclusion might have been drawn that the feeding of the two was equally profitable; but it was carried on through | the butcher’s test to the consumer, where the better | bred animal retailed for six guineas more than the scrub!! Besides, he was (ready for the block at any stage of the feeding period, while the scrub had to be kept until he had practically finished his growth before taking on the requisite finish. • ..Vi
The experiment also showed v that there was more net profit in the better bred steer at two v years old than at three and 5 a half, and he had to be fed a year longer, waiting for the scrub. This in itself is cers tainlya very important point, involving a year’s feeding and justifying the purchase of the quickest maturing type of beef sire to be had.
