Te Aroha AND Ohinemuri News.

SATURDAY, APRIL 25, 1908. OUR RAILWAY STATION.

This above all —to thine own self be true , And %t mutt follow as the night the day Thou eanst not then he false to any man Shakespeare.

It is an old, and in many respects a very true saying “ That First Impressions go a long way.’ 1 Speaking of the local railway station this does not give one a very favourable first impression of Te Aroha. The structure, which is a secondhand one carted from somewhere down the line many years ago, is, we venture to say, the most inconvenient and out-of-date station in |the North Island. Taking into consideration the size t o( the township fluid the amount of business trans acted at the station. Judging from the tone of the following letter received from the Minister for Railways, and, read at the Borough Council meeting the other evening, it looks as if this matter will be still further shelved-With reference to the representations made to the Hon. the Premier by the deputation which waited on him recently, respecting the necessity for the erection of a new railway station at Te Aroha, I have the honor to inform you that this matter has been engaging attention for some time past but owing to the large amount of expenditure necessary to provide the facilities required in anticipation of the opening of the North Island Main Trunk Railway, it has not up to date been possible, to do anything in the direction of providing a new station at Te Aroha. The matter, has, however, been voted for consideration when the next year’s estimates are being reviewed, and I hope it will then be possible to provide for the erection of a new railway station.” \ The Mayor, after the reading of the foregoing letter, said the Premier on his recent visit was 1 not deputationised re the Te Aroha railway station. It will be remembered that the Premier in his public speech on that occasion in the Domain volunteered the information “ that Te Aroha should, have a new railway station, and that an amount for the purpose would be placed on the estimates at the coming session.” For this promise the Premier was loudly applauded. Let us hope that Sir Joseph nof break faith with the people of Te Aroha.
