How to succeed: A novel recipe is given in a letter sent from an English farmer at Pokeno, New Zealand, to the Hereford Times. This new rate will come into force on the Ist., May Steamers will leave Taumarunui every second day, namely., Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, arriving at Wanganui the following days in time to connect with the express for Wellington. This substantial reduction in fares will no doubt still further increase the volume of traffio on the Wanganui River,

The moving picture entertainment given by. the Salvation Army in the Public Hall, on Good Friday evening, was well attended, and all present appeared to thoroughly enjoy themselves.

Dr. G. G. Kenny, of the Tourist Department, left Te Aroha yesterday morning for his holidays. During the Doctor's absence Dr. MacDaugall, of Rotorua, will bb in charge at Te Aroha. Says a late American paper “ With (he scattering of seeds -over the burned hillsides tbis week, San Francisco will begin the first actual .work for its beautification against the coming of the battleship fleet. At a meeting of the executive committee for the fleet's reception it was decided to sow’at once nasturtium, escholtsia, and Shirley poppy seeds, so that when May comes the slopes now dotted with spaces filled with brick and ashes will be filled with gorgeous colour. No time is to be lost, for the plants take almost three months to flower, and whatever the seeds and their sowing may cost will be appropri ated when the amount is known It was something after the foregoing that a recent correspondent to the Nxws suggested concerning the “ Bald Spur ’ ’ at Gie back of Te Aroha. With the judicious expenditure of a few pounds the slopes of onr present unsightly hill could be made areal picture.

"Night and Day", the quarterly orgau of the well-known Dr. Bamardo's Homes, has much that is interesting to tell about “ the greatest family in the world.” A month ago 8,006 boys and girls were under the care of the Homes, all of these admitted from below the poverty line, and comprising cripples, incurables, babies, deaf and dumb, blind and helpless children. They come, too, from all over the country. Among the illustrated editorial notes are several photographs of children from Hull, for Instance, where is situated one of the thirteen ever-open doors through which the homes are constantly receiving their supplies of the destitute. No wauder that the work needs money—eneugh for the victualling, clothing, upbringing and miscellaneous needs of a big town ! The usual spring party of emigrants left the homes on March 12, for Canada. Already 19,727 of their young people have gone to Canada and the Colonies, and the percentage of successes runs ap to over 9i per cent.: a remarkable figure! Surely £lO spent on one of these boys and girls is the host social investment of the present day.—lt is certainly remarkable, and not a little humiliating, that often- 42 years the homes should still have to rspeat that there is apparently as much used of their services as ever, Mr George B. Sims writes: “If the tales of tragedy of which some of the little children who are ntercifully taken, into Dr, Bernardo's Homes are the subjeote could be published in their naked trnth, the public conscience would be startled ae it has been startled by few revelations of modem times.’’—The varied contents of the Magazine comprise " A Missionary Bishop’s Tribute," by Bishop Ingham ; an account of the new Australian Deputation ; a deeply interesting reminiscence entitled "An Old Boy’s Memories,” etc., eto. A copy of the Magazine will be sent gratis and post free to any one on application to the Honorary Secretary. Mr Goorge Code, 18 to 26, Stepney Causeway, London, E*
