LABOUR ON RAND,- ; CAPETOWN, Yesterday. There are 25,000 more natives on the Rand than in 1907, due to commercial stagnation and the crisis in the diamond industry. V De Beers, Premier, and Jaggersfontein mines have released 20,000 and the Central South African railways 17,500. THE FISCAL SYSTEM. LONDON, Yesterday. If Curzonism is not exactly Balfourism to-day the l chances are that Balfourism will b 9 Curzonism to-morrow. Curzonism is not protection or retaliation, Hut is a specious proposal to broaden the basis of taxation for revenue purposes only. To keep freetraders within the party and relieve the wealthy from direct taxation, and provide funds forM social reform. \ The Daily News protests against broadening the basis of taxation which increases the cost of living to the : poor.
INDIAN TRAIN WRECKERS. CALCUTTA, Yesterday. The ringleader of th 9 party which attempted to destroy the train :conveying Sir Andrew Frazer, the Lieutenant-Governor of Bengal, and his wife, cabled on December 9th, was sentenced to ten years’, imprisonment 'and five accomplices to five years’ teach;”-'-- ‘ “ The ringleader confessed that he was induced to make the attempt for 12 rupees, which were never paid.
