Euchre Party.
There was a large ? attendanee at the third euchre party held last night in the Public Hall, in aid of improvements to the school. Twentytwo tables were in use, and the play at times was very exciting, and the chorus of “ Oh’s!’’ when the bell rang too soon was very amusing. Twenty-six games were played, and Mesdames Beswick, Edmonds, and Miss Jennings were highest for the ladies, with 18 games each, while Mesdames Jennings, and Edwards had 17, and Miss Edwards 16.
In the play-off Mrs Beswick beat Mrs Edmonds, and Miss Jennings beat Mrs Beswick in the final, thereby winning the first prize. Mrs Jefferson was successful in winning the ladies “ booby ” prize. For the gentlemen, Mr J. Jennings won the first prize with 19 games, while Messrs Somers and Dormer were close up with 18 games each, and Mr Steele was successful in securing “ Booby." Mr and Mrs Burton had charge of the tournament, and kept things going merrily, while Miss Burton kept charge of the bell. After the games were finished refreshments were handed round by the ladies’ committee, and greatly appreciated. The Chairman of the School Committee, in humorous speeches, presented the prizes. Great credit is due to the energetic: secretary, Mr Burton, for the success of the evening, and the announcement that the Committee had decided to hold another euchre party and dance on September 18, was received with applause. .
