Flax-grading.
- " ja An amendment of the flax grading regulations issued in April last appear in the Gazette. In the main the regulations are the same, the chief alteration being in the method of arriving at the quality. Bands of hemp, equal in quality to aver-' age of bale, instead of tow bands, ,are retained. Instead of allotting 20 points to each of the five divisions of quality, washing has been eliminated, and the scoring now reads—for stripping 25 points, for scutc.hing 25, for colour 25, for strength 25 ; total 100. The standards have been altered by making the range for “superior” 10 points instead of 9. These now read—“ superior,” 90 to 100 points, inclusive ; B grade, “ fine,” 80 to 89 points ; C grade, “ good fair,” 70 to 79 points; D grade, “ fair,” 60 to 69 points ; E grade, “ common,” 50 to 59 points ; F grade, “ rejected,” under 50 points. This condemned fibre may now be shipped as “ rejected,” but the grader may absolutely condemn any hemp which, in his opinion, has been so badly treated as to make it useless.
