The Taupiri Mystery.

Detective Fahey, of Auckland, who went to Taupiri to enquire into the circumstances surrounding the disappearance of Patrick McSweeney, has telegraphed to Inspector Cullen as follows : “ The trap containing Hagan and McSweeney has been traced off the road in several places. The river and creeks are in flood, and there is no doubt that McSweeney is drowned. McSweeney’s dog returned home at 7 a.m, and later in the day returned to the creek. 20 chains along the road from where the trap was found. A search party is out. McSweeney had no money when -he left home. The river is going down fast ” Inspector Cullen is of the opinion that ‘ the mere fact of the dog returning to the river-bank is proof that McSweeney has been drowned.
