UMPIRE DEFENDS HIMSELF.
(By Telegraph—Press Association.)
SYDNEY, YesterdayMr Rush, the umpire in Saturday’s 6cullipg race, in a letter to the press, j replying to criticisms, says: “Had I ' —- given any -other decision than I did, it would have caused a stain on New Soutn Wales Sport, fair play and justice, that would not easily have been washed out.” He adds.: “ Towns says that after the foul he did not try. I leave the public to judge if this is the language of a manly sportsman.” WELLINGTON, This Day. The general opinion here is that Wanganui people are becoming somewhat ludicrous in their enthusiasm about the victory of the professional sculler. There x is a proposal afoot to present the cham • with a house and land, and even to. **sbtain a Government grant in aid. Needless to say, the latter proposal is strongly condemned as savoring of athleticism ran mad. A communication has been received by the town clerk of Auckland from the Mayor of Wanganui, appealing for assistance towards tie proposed national testimonial to Webb, in recognition of performance in carrying off the world’s championship sculling contest. Subscription lists have been forwarded with a request that- donations to the fund be accepted. The'Mayor of Auckland is also invited to attend the reception which is to be given to Webb on his return to Wanganui.
