THE MIDDLE ISLAND

The Hon. R. McNab has issued instructions to the Lands and Survey Department, that the name Middle Island is not to be used in future. This name, which is regarded by many as entirely a misnomer, dates back to the foundation of the colony. The South Island appears in the oldest maps as “Tavai poenammo,” or some other corruption of the Walii Poenaniu, with the addition of the pakeha term, “or Middle Island,” Stewart Island being regarded as the South Island. When the South Island became New Munster, under the two-province system, it. still retained the name Middle Island, which has stuck to it in maps ever since.
