THE DEMAND FOR LAND.
| The- Commissioner for Crown Lands 1 (Mr Jas. Mackenzie), in his report, on i the operations in the Auckland district, opens with the remark that not- \ withstanding that 497 persons have | been allotted 185,424 acres at the I various leasehold and occupation I tenures the official records show that there , continues a keen demand for K land 'by people who are anxious to be- ’ come settled on farms of their own. 1 During the year 236 settlers took up 103,812 acres ini the district under the occupation with right, of purchase tenure. The. area taken -up .under the lease in perpetuity system in. the district under the Land for Settlemnt Act was 15,586 acres divided amongst 67 selectors. The total cash received during the year on past and current transactions in the district was £92, 302. The area, thrown open during the year being 992,483 acres. It is estimated that during the current year a further area of 145,009 acres will be thrown open; “Generally speaking,’ says Mr Mackenzie, “the reports from Crown Lands Rangers shows that, there are signs of progress in almost, every direction. In localities that cannot be included amongst the more progressive ones, all that can be said is that they are practically in the same position as when last reported on. The non-progressive districts may have difficulties peculiar to them which have not affected other localities, and yet, whilst not showing siims of. progress, have at. least held their own.
