The ship McDiermid, from Newcastle bound to a South American port, arrived at Auckland on Tuesday in a disabled condition. She encountered a heavy gale soon after leaving Newcastle. The fore topmast was carried away at the cap, but apparently the vessel has sustained no other damage. On Sunday evening he was caught trying to escape from a porthole in a lavatory. The ship’s officers burst tha door and seized him by the legs just as he was disappearing. They hung on while the vessel was stopped and a line lowered, and he was hauled aboard again. His condition was serions, and he gradually sank. Riddel was a prominent supporter of the sculler Webb. . Woods’ Great Peppermint Cure for coughs and colds never fails, Is (3d and 2s Gd.—Advt. The attention of the farming comruun ity and all interested in matters agricultural and pastoral is drawn to Messrs 1 Kempthorne Prosser and Co’s new advertisement appearing in our columns re high grade Malden Guano. This Guano is too well and favourably known as a fertiliser to require any special comment from us. A noticeable feature, however about Malden Guano is specially emphasized here, viz , that of 08 per cent, phosphate of lime of which the manure is composed no less than 24 per cent is soluble in one per cent, citric acid, the equivalent of plant juice, while in 2 per cent, of citric acid as much as 34.77 per cent, of the phosphates is readily soluble. This manure is therefore all that Messrs Kempthorne Prosser and Company claim it to be -a most valuable fertiliser.
A “ cockey ” out west named McLuro Had suffered from coughing and chills, He saved up his money like bees getting honey. And never would spend on his ills. The next meeting of the Young Men’s Club will be held in the Bandrocmon Monday night. A paper will be given by Mr Burton (affirmative) “ Should the Totalisator be abolished.” For the purposes of discussion the Rev. C. Robertson will present some of the arguments usually advanced in support of the totalisator. The Rising Sun Gold Mining Company’s Mine Manager reports for the week ending 27th July, as follows; —The cross- cut into the hanging wall at the bottom of the winze is now in- a total distance of 20 feet. Several small quartz veins have been intersected during the week. The airshaft is down a total distance of 17 feet and timbered up. Progress lias been slow this week owing to the flood water from the recent heavy rain.
One of the most useful things in the house is to be bought in Te Aroha at wholesale price, ask Johnson and Wigg.— Advt.
Two thousand seven hundred dozen eggs were graded at the Government poultry depot, Auckland, last week. Mr A. Pouusford (chief grader) states that eggs are coming in more freely at present,, the number increasing by about 500 dozen per week. Last November 33,000 dozen eggs were graded at the depot, but it is expected, that fully three times that number will be put through during November of this year. Mr Pouusford still complains of the dirty state in which many of the settlers seud their eggs to the depot At the instigation of a number of settlers on both sides of the range, Mr J. A, Young has communicated with Messrs Greenslade and Herris in respect to using their joint efforts to obtain a substantial vote on the Public Works Estimates for the Kaimai Road. I i this connection Mr Young has received the following reply from Mr Greenslade ; Wellington, 18th July, 1908.—1 have to acknowledge receipt of yours of the 1-lth inst, requesting urn to consult with Mr Herries and use our influence to secure a substantial vote on the estimates this session for the proper formation of the Kaimai Road'. I agree with you that the making of this road suitable for vehicular traffic will render invaluable service, alike to the Tauranga County District and Borough on the one side of the range, and the Thames Valley and Waikato, especially Cambridge on the other. I have had a chat with Mr Herries on the subject and we will both do all we possibly can to assist.”

To do good work it is recognised as necessary to have the best material, and every new labour saver placed upon the market is deserving of the careful consideration of that class of the community who are in need of its use. We would draw the attention of our farming friends and stock breeders generally to a new brand for use on stock, which can be seen at Air D. McL. Wallace’s factory in Whitaker-street, which is decidedly an improvement on the old sort, The brand is the same as that usually used, with the exception that instead of the whole thing being one piece there is a loop at the end into which can be adjusted any brand you may desire, which is held fast by the insertion of a pin underneath. The brand is made of mailable steel, has a perfectly level face, and being made of this material is not liable to bend or be easily knocked about by rough usage. It is altogether a well-finished piece of work which should meet with a ready sale. THE BEST MILKING MACHINE.
Many people are anxious to know whicli is the best milking machine There is only one safe and inexpensive way to find out —“ Wait and See. ’ It takes two full seasons to prove if a machine is a reliable milker or not. When the fact that it does not effect the cows has been established, it will be time enough to go into the question of which does the best milking. You do not require to wait and see if the “ L.K G. ” is reliable, this was proved three years ago, and hundreds of practical men endorse the verdict to-day.
