THE KOLAPORE CUP.
The Kola pore Cu : p is the ‘‘'blue riband” event! in rifle shooting, and there is strenuous endeavour made to secure it every year by representatives of the various parts of the Empire. Amongst the names of winning teams inscribed upon the cup is that of New Zealand, a team of our marksmen under command of Colonel Collins Irwin" beaten all competitors in 1904. As long ago as 1897 a team of New Zealanders 'got second place in the competition, on which occasion a Victorian team won. In 1902 New Zealand (under Colonel Sonnmerville) was unsuccessfully represented, but in 1904 the colony’s representatives won as above related. Major Hughes went to Bisley with a team of .defenders in hhe year succeeding, but though they dicl some good shooting ; two teams finished ahead of them in the aggregate. No New Zealand team participated in the subsequent com tests for the cup. Probably a team would have been sent to England this year, fount ,p or the. fact that a big rifle shooting meeting in New” South Wales will (be fired in.a few months’ time. At this gathering Great! Britain, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand will participate, and thus opportunity will be given to test our marksmen against those of the rest of the Eimpire with much less expense and loss of time than a trip to Bisley 1 entails.
