TUBERCULOSIS AND MILK
Some interesting information on the subject of tuberculosis and milk supply was given to Parliament by the Minister for Agriculture (Hon. R. MoNab). The matter of tuberculosis, he remarked, had been under the control of the Veterinary Department for a very long time, and they found they had no:v como to this position, that unless they were prepared to embark on fresh lines they were going to have tuberculosis in the colony until the end of time. While they eliminated it from the herds of the colony at one point., they supplied it to the herds of the Colony at another point., and the investigations of the Veterinary Department resulted in this—that they ascertained 1 that wherever the dairy industry was being carried on to any great extent tuberculosis was prevalent, while in those parts of the colony where the dairy industry was not gone on with tuberculosis was almost unknown. It was the opinion, of the officers of the Veterinary Department that the spread of tuberculosis at the present time was due to the condition of the milk which was being supplied to the dairy factories, and for years there had been a clamour for some sort of inspection. In view of that clamour Cabinet decided 1 to extend the operations of the Stock Department to the inspection of milk applies, a£ an estimated cost of about £12,(100 a year. The fees payable represented about £4OOO.
