ANTI-JAPANESE FEELING
Reports from San Francisco, says a New York despatch, indicate a lamentable situation, despite the roseate statements circulated by officials. The condition of chaos after the earthquake, together with the enormous demand for workmen for rebuilding, enalble the labour organisations to dominate affairs. The result is not only to render the work of reconstrue- j tion impossibly costly, but to hand j over the community to a system of “graft” and corruption. The chaos I furnishes the Japanese with an op- 1 port-unity of which they are taking advantage to an extent which explains the bitter hostility which the San j
Francisco labour pa.rt.j- is now mani-l testing. Destroyed properties, which the owners are unable to reconstruct! on account of the labour difficulty, arc! being purchased by Japanese capital- j [ ist® employing Japanese labour in re- ! building, with the result that many of the finest sites in the city have passed to Japanese merchants, who are doing prosperous business, while their white competitors are still struggling to re-erefct their ruined ware-
houses. The working men arc beinsr. incited to attack the Japanese as enemies of Labour, and there are fears of racial disturbances. The power ofl the labour unions renders the Stateauthorities impotent.
