The Piako Swamp.

DRAINAGE SCHEME ADOPTED. (N.Z. “ Herald ” Correspondent). Wellington, Sunday. I have it on first hand authority that the Government has definitely adopted a- scheme of drainage in connection with the Piako Swamp, and that a staff of men will begin on this work next September. A vote for the |first instalment of the work will be placed on the Estimates during the coming session. Under the Government scheme, as the work progresses areas of land will be made available for settlement by reason of the drainage operations, besides opening up fresh areas of flax country for cultivation. # The work is likely to take a considerable time to complete, but the Government is in earnest in the matter, and as the Minister for Lands has personolly inspected the locality -- and has thus gained a thorough v knowledge of the possibilities of the flax industry in the Waikato district, the province of Auckland is certain ere long to reap substantial benefits from this important undertaking.
