At the end of the financial year the New-Z'altnd Police. Provident Fund stood at '£29,129. The One Tree Hill Domain Board are taking steps to have a thorough survey of the caves known to exist in One Tree Hill. Some people think these caves or passages are more extensive than' is generally supposed, and originally extended from one side of the Mount to the other, with outlets at various points and were part of the defence works of this once famous fighting pah. Cullen’s Te Aroha.—Advt, The Port Darwin correspondent of the Sydney “ Daily Telegraph” states that one of the Federal visitors, Mr Johnson, M H.R., had a peculiar experience. It appears that while Mr Johnson was walking on the beach at Port Darwin he felt tired, and went to sit down on what, appeared to be a log of wood, but what proved to be an alligator. It showed fight, and Mr Johnson threw a big stone into its open jaws. Thereupon it took to the water.
A Nebraska dairyman says he once tested the milk of a cow after she was suffering the excitement of being chased about. The Babcock teste? showed 2.3 per cent, of butter-fat : the next morning the test showed 1.1 per cent. ; and in a week, when she had regained her wonted state of mind, she tested 6 per cent. Farmers who allow a dog to rush and worry the cows, because they do not move quite as fast as suits their driver, may study this fact with profit.

Saturday’s “ Oamaru Mail ” says : “ We have received information from a dependable source that the Hon. W. Hall Jones is to take a prolonged holiday, with a view to regain his health ; that, as his colleagues properly assess his value as an administrator, they will not allow him to resign ; and that a rearrangement of portfolios will take place, which will result in the Hon. J. A. Millar being Minister of Railways for the present at least, and other possible changes. This is the only course that could reasonably be adopted under the highly regrettable circumstances. It had been decided by th,e Managing Committee of the Waikato Winter Show, in response to numerous requests, to add classes for needlework exhibits at the forthcoming show. The classes will comprise, plain needlework, decorative needlework, work on linen, muslin, etc., cross stitch, point lace work, knitting, crochet, and miscellaneous articles. This addition to the schedule is now being printed and will be ready on Saturday. Mr C. F. Bond is giving a special prize for one of the classes in this section.

MILKING MACHINE EVIDENCE. Messrs VV. Bailey and Son, of Waiuku, write as follows re the LawrenceKennedy'Gillies milking machine. “ We are using three machines for the third season, and we find them satisfactory. We milk .86 cows in one and a-half to one and threequarter hour. One man can look after the machines and carry the milk away, and one boy attend to the bailing up etc., while one or two boys do the stripping, which, as a rule, there is very little to do. The butter fat test and quantity of milk are fnlly maintained and v e find no ill effects on the cows. There is no trouble with keeping quality of the milk.” MacEwans, Ltd Agents. The Presbyterian services for next Sunday are: Te Aroha 11 a m. and 7 p.m.. and Manawaru 2.30 p.m. The Saturday members of the young men’s Hockey Club will practice in the pound paddock on Saturday afternoon, at 3 o’clock. Owing to an oversight in our last issue it was made to appear that a number of candidates received communion on Sun lay night. It should have read “ received confirmation.” »
At Ellerslie, on Saturday afternoon, an old man was stepping off the Derby stand wb' n he slipped and fell, breaking his leg. He was given all possible attention at the time, and afterwards sent to the hos ital.
A social in aid of the S- Mark’s Parish Hail will be held in the Public Hall to-mght, from 7.30 to 11 p.m. sharp This is the first of a series for this season,, to be given by the Girl’s Guild. These socials were very popular last year, and as they are for a very deserving object, they should be well supported. At the Supreme Court J. S. Taylor, retried on a charge of poisoning a horse at Hamilton, was sentenced to nine months imprisonment. A deputation of women waited on the Hon. G. Fowlds in regard to Miss McMillan’s death from plague. A sister of the deceased was among the deputation an i claimed that deceased really died from fear on her way to the Hospital by herself. The Minister said steps would be taken to prevent a recurrence of the complaint. Offers have been received forj the pur. chase of the Government schooner Ccnness of Ranfurly, but in no case did the figure named, influence the Minister pf the Cook Islands, to transfer. Applications have been received from Auckland ■and elsewhere for the charter of the vessel, but tin conditions are unacceptable to the Minister, who would probably have utilised the Countess for the State coal trade had her cargo-carryingcapacity warranted that step. The Government native land purchase agents were in Ngaruawahia on Friday, with the object of taking over 13,500 acres of Te Akau block in from Karaka. The owners interested number about 50, and £B,OOO cash was paid out yesterday. This land will be placed on the market at an early date for closer settlement under the optional system, which no doubt will meet with the approval of all intending settlers. The Board will immediately turn its attention to the purchase of 17,000 acres at the Baglan end, and this will also be placed on the market on the same conditions. There is sure to bo a rush for the land.
A well-attended meeting was held at Putaruru on Wednesday evening for the purpose of forming a branch of the Liberal and i abour Federation. Mr J. A. Young, who addressed the meeting on the subject of Liberalism, was well received. He congratulated the settlers on the progress made with the • Sel wyn Estate. All they wanted was to obtain the option of freehold. If ever he had the honour to represent them in Parlia ment as member for the Taurauga dis • triet, he would endeavour to obtain a concession on something like original valuation. The Branch was then formed. Mr Philpott moved a hearty vote of thanks to Mr Young. The motion was carried with enthusiasm.
A very successful concert was given by St. Paul’s Musical Society at Paeroa last night, assisted by St. Mark’s Musical Society, Te Aroha. There was a packed house, and the performers acquitted them - selves in good style. Songs were given in the first part of the programme by Mesdames Newsham and Wigg, Messrs Collins and Quick. While solos, with choruses were given by Miss Medhurst and Mr Fredric. The overture was given by Misses D. Evans (piano) Medhurst (violiu) and Messrs Gracie, and J. Crosby (violins). In the second part the cantata. “ The Song of the Bell ” was given by about fifty performers, Mr Wharton Thompson conducting.
