YOUNG AUSTRALIA.
The State Governor, ;S-ir Harry Rawson fin congratulating the University of Sydney, in his speech at the Town Hall recently on the appointment of Colonel Foster as Director of Military Education, snoke of the duty of Australians to so equip themselves as to be ready to defend their country, if ever such a necessity should arise. Remarking that Australia was a very big place, Sir Harry said he had not realised how large it was until he had seen this demonstrated in a very simple manner by putting together the Continent of Australia-, cut from separate mapsi. It was found that Europe fitted in remarkably well, except for Norway, Sweden, and Russia. Let them think of the millions of people who inhabited all that territory of Europe, except the one-third of Russia; and then let them, turn to Australia and see what, a very small population she had, just over five millions. It was the duty of every boy and every man in Australia, therefore, to prepare for the defence of his country. “Conscription is a, thing that we cannot think of in England,” “but I would like to see in England and in every colony all tbe schools trained, so that every bov should be able to use a rifle, shoot straight, and to know something about company drill. If these things are done they will go to the foundation of ai national army. He would like. University students to pay the greatest attention to this subject, because they would form a nucleus from which the supply of competent officers would be drawn, and he should like to know that all the young men at the University belonged to ai rifle club, and were preparing themselves to take their places, if ever the necessity arose, to' defend this grand inheritance of ours.
