One sign of the appreciation in which New Zealand butter is held at Horne is a letter written by a retailer doing a high-class family trade, which appeared in a recent number of the “ Grocer.” The retailer in question stated that before he took up the New Zealand butter regularly he was selling the best Danish he could get, but was constantly getting complaints. With the New Zetland butter, however, he found his trade greatly increased. Some 16 years ago, on the Tasmania east coast, the Scamander bridge was washed away in a big flood, and the Government fixed up a temporary punt. The custom was to drive the four horses and the coach on to the punt and pull at a : wire rope. A good fresh was running when I was there, and the rope parted and left us drifting towards the ocean some hundred yards away. Fortunately the punt grounded on a sand spit. The driver, one Avery, told of a previous experience of the kind, but on this occasion he 'went out some miles to sea, and was there picked up by a coastal steamer without losing a horse. The mate was on the bridge at the time, and when he sighted the punt he sent a sailor dowm to the captain to report a coach and four horses on the port bow. Said sailor was immediately ordered into irons for being drunk and disrespectful and a dangerous lunatic. It being a bright moonlight night the captain presently saw how things were, and took everything on board including the driver, who had stuck to the reins right through. — Bulletin. Mr W. OK ! Yes, there are lots of things that are OK, but our washing machine beats the lot. Try one. Johnson and Wigg.—Advt. County Clerk Gilchrist is a bit of a humorist. This trait in his character came out at the Piako County meeting. He was engaged in reading a virulent letter from an exasperated settler, who discoursed in a learned manner, on “ The cardinal principle laid down in local bodies.” The Council, it was asserted, had spent twelve to fifteen years frying to turn a creek, and, “ then can’t do it.” The letter concluded, “If you wish it, play away with the creek, but if you raise any more dams to dam the water I shall certainly ” the clerk paused, and Councillors looked fierce as if bracing themselves for a blow, “ go for you.”—Waikato Times.
EFFECTIVE MECHANICAL MILKING.
Mr S. Turley, of Wairenga, writes : “I have pleasure instating that after two years’ continuous summer and winter use of the “ Lawrence-Ken-nedy-Gillies ” Milking Machines, I am thoroughly satisfied with the effectiveness and. general working of the machines. One important feature is that any intelligent boy can manage them after very little instruction.
