Hungahunga Drainage Board.

MAIN TENDER HELD OYER. ■a A meeting of the Board was held on Saturday afternoon, there being present: Messrs T. Hanna (chairman), H. Magill, D. Waghorp, Stanley and W. Lockyer. The following letter was received from Mr Bell’s solicitor: —“ Chairman, Hungahunga Drainage Board. Dear Sir, —Mr Alexander Bell asks me on his behalf to intimate to your Board that he must hold the Board responsible for any damage that may be suffered upon his property at Waihekau by or in consequence of the proposed drainage operations which you are now about to undertake. If there is any damage done by increased flow of water, Mr Bell, I am asked to state, will be forced to take action against the Drainage Board. Mr Bell has previously intimated verbally that he must not be made to suffer by the discharge of your drainage waters upon or through his land, and he wishes to be quite clear in the matter, hence this intimation.” Mr Laird, on behalf of Mr Bell, interviewed the Board in regard to the matter cf draining his side of the swatnp. He said that this drain would cause the water of Nos. 2 and 3 drains to flow to Mr Bell’s property and lie there Considerable discussion ensued, and the Board considered the best thing possible would be to v bring all the objectors into the drainage area. Mr Stanley suggested it would be a good idea to get a 1 the country down to the Waitoa in ih":r drainage scheme. Mr Laird said the objectors would want something definite to go on, and to know how much they would be rated if brought into the area. He considered the Board sh'ould get an estimate from their engineer as to the cost of the work and also what their rate would be.

The Board was in favour of the suggestion and replied that they would think the matter over and try and come to an amicable agreement. Mr Laird then withdrew.

In regard to the tenders for the Piraunui drain (No. 3) it was decided to hold them over until they communicated with the engineer, and instructed him to bring up the creek to the present contract, so as to give it a clear fall of five feet

Two tenders were received for the No. 2 drain, at £1 12s and 9s per chain. On the motion of Mr Magill, seconded by the Chairman, the lowest tender was accepted. The Board decided to instruct the en gineer to peg out the line and take levels and give an estimate of the cost of the drain from Mr Waghorn’s boundary up to Mr Sheen’s first boundary; also from Diagoual*road to Alexandra road. This conclud"d the business.
