DUNEDIN, This Day.
A deputation representing the Benevolent Trustees waited on Hon. Geo. Fowlds, asking that a portion of the poll tax on Chinamen be devoted to sending indigent Chinese back to China. It was explained that the total cost to maintain the Chinese in the colony was about £BSB per annum, whilst they could be sent back for £l2 per head. The Minister replied that application should be made to the Charitable Aid Board which received subsidies from the Government.
