THE GREAT KANSASMISSOURI MUDDLE.

A FINE OBJECT LESSON IN STRAIGHTFORWARD TEMPERANCE POLITICS.

v By William Durhan, b. a.

(Continued from last issue.)

The Court was not to be trifled with. It cited Mr Rose for contempt a few days after he had taken the oath. He took his seat as Mayor on May 11th. On July 6th the Court a second time ordered him to quit the office, and fined him a thousand dollars for contempt. On July 9th the United States Supreme Court granted a stay of judgment, but on July 20th a second contempt proceeding was begun against him. He resigned, on condition that this suit be dismissed. And thus the “ vindication ” as it has been called, is in favour, not of the Prohibition law.

THE RUM POWER IN POLITICS. This is a critical struggle which is being waged in the United States, in which Maine, North Dakota, and Kansas are taking the lead. In Kansrs

City, Kansas, during the last few months, while Mr Rose and the Supreme Court have been in conflict, every “ joint ” in the place has been closed through the fearless action of Mr C.. C. Coleman. The

municipality have been enjoyed by the Kansas Supreme Court from accepting funds from the drinking “ joints,” aud yet through most of the time of Rose’s mayoralty these collections were regularly made. On account of the inhibition no

public accounting of the money received was made. Mr Rose has published elaborate apologetics to prove the wisdom of has position. He coldly declaivs that Prohibition plays into the hands of the “rum power in politics,” but his demonstrations of this proposition are so vague and foggy that I have

vainly tried to comprehend them. Kansas is sold for Prohibition, and is flourishing by leaps and bounds.
